Jaap evoked not just disapproval but also admiration for the unconventional daring in his portrayals. At some point, one of those admirers, a rich man of nobility (name unknown), gave him a gorgeous painting box as a gift, filled to the brim with tubes of oil paint and other painting supplies. Jaap experienced this gift as a real encouragement for his work and for the path he had taken. Apart from that, the contents of the box served him very well (after all, it was Depression time). Partly because of this gift, he was able to create a lot of work during that period. A few years later he would immortalize the image on the lid of that box in a painting of his own (The Red Horse) |
